Trattoria Stella is as exotic as they come as far as ambiance and setting. Located in the historic village at Grand Traverse Common this is where the locals go for a night out. The Italian inspired restaurant carries the Farm-to-Table philosophy and heralds the area's farms as its partners. The menu is inspired with vegetarian selections and a constantly changing menu based on what is most fresh.
Depending on the season that you go to Trattoria Stella, the menu may include something like a butternut squash lasagna, or a spaghetti with sauteed golden chantrelles, carmelized onions, and golden heirloom tomato sauce with parmesan cheese. The salad that caught my eye during my visit was the gingergold apples and arugula with shaved fennel, toasted pignoli, and mascarpone & honey dressing. But check the menu as it is always newly created each day. One of the most impressive features of the restaurant is that one of the co-owners, Amanda Danielson, who is head sommelier, is working toward becoming a master sommelier. Amanda trains the servers who are also very knowledgeable about food and wine pairings. The wines are stellar as are the beer selections and specialty drinks. Michigan wines, as well as, carefully selected wines from Italy, France, California, Oregon, Australia and other locations around the world are available. Trattoria Stella has been a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner since 2005.
