San Chez Bistro and Café is one of the most known and loved restaurants along Michigan's West Coast in Grand Rapids. The reason may be the culinary staff and management headed up by Dan Gendler, General Manager, who has built the San Chez reputation through his expert understanding of culinary art. His knowledge and attention to authenticity and detail show through in this artful tapas restaurant that's been on the Grand Rapids scene for almost 20 years. San Chez Bistro works hard to support sustainable businesses by incorporating locally produced ingredients and farm to table products in their menus. They are one of the few restaurants who offer Food Sensitivity and Allergy menus including nut free, gluten free, soy free, lactose free, garlic free, vegan, and other dishes for those who have special dietary needs. They were one of the first restaurants to embrace "green" practices and have an impressive standard for incorporating environmentally sound activities throughout the restaurant's operations.
San Chez Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. They serve unique Spanish breakfast items along with a standard breakfast menu. Exciting breakfast cocktails include morning mo'rockin' mimosas, mo'rockin marys' (bloody mary, very spicy) and other creative drinks. Lunch time delights are also inventive. They include a number of wraps, soups, salads, open faced melts, panini's and breads with unique cheese, vegetable, and meat inspired toppings with a Spanish influence. But the tapas are truly the stars here, ranging in flavor from spicy to smokey , vegetarian to meat focused, garlicy and olive oil based. The multi-page menu on the San Chez Bistro side of the restaurant gives guests the culinary experience of traveling to Spain where you can spend hours ordering the small plates to sample and enjoy with friends or a partner. Some of the favorites include wild-caught herbed salmon grilled with roasted potatoes, spinach and roasted red peppers; char grilled lamb marinated in raspberry chili sauce atop chorizo mashed potatoes; classic blue cheese fritters with red pepper aioli; and grilled chicken and chorizo skewered with a garlic, cumin alioli. There's so much more, like the gazpacho, the tostones y platanos (fried plantains), and a variety of paellas to share. If you were to go here for five meals you'd only make a dent in the expansive menu. Spanish wines and sangria are the drinks of choice.
I have been going to San Chez Bistro now for 15 years. I have yet to try everything on the menu. I appreciate the variety and ever-changing menu. The service and quality of food are of the best that I have had in the country. Michael - Grand Rapids March 2009 This place is AWESOME!!! Even though we now live in FL we always hit San Chez when in GR. Love their Tapas menu - stop in and give them a try - you won't be disappointed. Teddi from Palm Harbor, Florida July 2010
