A Fashion Designer of Food Executive Pastry Chef at Amway Grand Plaza Hotel
I imagined Scott Hunter, Executive Pastry Chef for the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids as serious man with glasses and a perfectionists demeanor. That would have been consistent with his exacting skill creating beautiful desserts for all of the restaurants at the Amway Grand Plaza including the AAA 5 diamond 1913 Room. I had enjoyed specialties such as the Chocolate Toffee Torte, the Raspberry Royale, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Carrot Cake and Flourless Chocolate Cake. I had savored bites of seasonal breads and lavosh with flavored butter during occasional dinners at their restaurants, and had tasted assortments of Danish pastries, muffins and other amazing breakfast breads during overnight stays at the hotel.

Angus Campbell, Chef Instructor, The Heritage Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)
151 Fountain Street NE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-234-3700 | www.grcc.edu/heritage
There is excitement and anticipation in the kitchens at the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education where lunch is in full swing at their impressive restaurant, The Heritage. First year culinary students are in the process of earnestly preparing the daily menu of small plates, cool plates, hot plates and sharing plates comprised of tantalizing dishes such as Tuscan spiced butter poached giant shrimp, Apple wood smoked bacon and Fugi apple salad , roasted thyme infused Confit of duck and much more. Their leader, Chef Angus Campbell darts around the kitchen studying the preparations, jumping in, when necessary to coach them. He smiles broadly, encouraging his many students who all want to impress and do their best for this teacher they simply refer to as Chef. The reverence for his abilities and knowledge, and how he wants and expects this lunchtime kitchen to be run, is evident. He expects nothing but the best from his students as he carefully guides them to bring forth with precision every ingredient and every item in each separate creation. No potato or carrot is too small to be treated equally to Confit of Duck, Alaskan Halibut or Beef Tenderloin.
Angus Campbell, the engaging chef instructor, is one of the favorites of students at the Secchia Institute. As he talks about cooking and becoming a master chef its not hard to understand why.

Patrick Wise, Executive Chef, Bistro Bella Vita & Green Well (Michigan's West Coast)
44 Grandville Ave. SW | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-222-4600
Patrick Wise looks like an active sportsman with a boyish face and rugged, athletic build, but for more than 12 years he has been actively practicing his craft as an executive chef. Interested in fine food since childhood, Patrick loved to eat steak and shrimp versus burgers and pizza. He attributes his energy, work ethic and passion for the culinary life to his mother, who raised him as a single mom since age 12. You will now see him at age 33 working in the kitchen, always the kitchen, along with his crew serving at least 6 lunches and five dinners per week at one of the two restaurants where he brings his culinary magic to life - Bistro Bella Vita and Green Well in Grand Rapids.
Wise is very hands-on. He doesn't just want to manage the staff, he wants to teach them directly all that he knows about the foods that he loves to prepare. In his own words, "I love the high pace and multi tasking that's a part of working as a chef in the kitchen."

San Chez Bistro & Café (Michigan's West Coast)
38 West Fulton | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-774-8272 | Fax: 616-774-9954
San Chez Bistro and Café is one of the most known and loved restaurants along Michigan's West Coast in Grand Rapids. The reason may be the culinary staff and management headed up by Dan Gendler, General Manager, who has built the San Chez reputation through his expert understanding of culinary art. His knowledge and attention to authenticity and detail show through in this artful tapas restaurant that's been on the Grand Rapids scene for almost 20 years. San Chez Bistro works hard to support sustainable businesses by incorporating locally produced ingredients and farm to table products in their menus. They are one of the few restaurants who offer Food Sensitivity and Allergy menus including nut free, gluten free, soy free, lactose free, garlic free, vegan, and other dishes for those who have special dietary needs. The Walker Roadhouse (Michigan's West Coast)
3272 Remembrance Road NW | Walker, MI, 49544 | 616-791-9922 | Fax: 616-791-9940
I like The Walker Roadhouse west of downtown Grand Rapids largely because of the location along Leonard Street (at Remembrance Road). From Grand Rapids, The Roadhouse is a great stop along the scenic trip over to Lake Michigan and Grand Haven.
The food is decent with sandwiches, salads, seafood, pasta and steaks. But the setting is way cool old roadside inn feel with wood floors, long wood bar and plenty of tables.
Since I like Apps and Salads they have plenty of these at The Walker Roadhouse like Buffalo Chicken Dip which is pulled chicken in a spicy buffalo sauce with cream cheese and spices topped with co-jack cheese and served with celery and tortilla chips. Other Apps include bruschetta, Thai lettuce wraps, and sweet potato fries.
The salads all look good, but I always opt for the Ceasar with grilled shrimp. There's also a Thai Shrimp salad and the Traverse City Chicken salad with dried cherries and a cherry vinaigrette.
If you want a beautiful drive check out The Walker Roadhouse for a casual change in scenery and a stop before hitting the farms and fields of West Michigan along Leonard Street heading from Grand Rapids going west to Lake Michigan....See Photos and Much More Info

84 East Food & Spirits (Michigan's West Coast)
84 East 8th Street | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-396-8484
Consistently great ratings make 84 East in Holland a great pick for a casual crowd. Known for their big portions, inexpensive prices, great service, and casual atmosphere, the food is consistently good, too. The warm bread served before the meal, the Tuxedo Chicken, and the two-bite sundaes (just enough for a craving sweet tooth) score high among regular goers. They have a full bar, too. I like their Thai pasta salad with char grilled chicken and the designer pizza's especially the chicken Caesar or shrimp and prosciutto. This is a place where shorts and flip flops fit in!

8th Street Grille (Michigan's West Coast)
20th West 8th Street | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-392-5888
The 8th Street Grill is known for its soups. As a local's favorite place for lunch, burgers and sandwiches are also good. Their beer selection is impressive. Their menu features three fresh soups daily. I like their expanded burger menu with the endless grill fries (if you can afford to splurge once in a while). The Knickerbocker is also reported to be a good grilled sandwich. They also have entrees like Hunter Style Chicken and Smothered Chopped Steak. Their salads are supposed to be good, too, but there are only three to choose from the Caesar, Greek, and a garden tossed. They have a soda fountain with shakes, malts and floats that kids young and old really like.

Alpenrose Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)
4 East 8th Street | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-393-2111 | Fax: 616-393-0027
A good restaurant for food in Holland, the Alpenrose has performed well over time and has a solid following. The décor is very European and the service is great. They are especially friendly to large groups. Although this isn't the "hippest" place to go in the area, it is wonderful for lunch or a quiet dinner. They have extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner menus which lean toward German, Austrian, Swiss, and American features. There are also French and Italian menu selections which are reminiscent of the Alpen region of Europe from whence their name is derived. Among the most interesting menu items are the "British are Coming Omelet" with fried tomato slices, potatoes, mushrooms and cheddar cheese and the "Ou La La French toast", thick cut french bread coated with almond egg batter and slivered almonds and served with applewood smoked bacon. Their enticing dinner entrees include a pork tenderloin "grill fired" with beer braised bacon- laced cabbage, spaetzle and an apple bourbon sauce, the Wiener Schnitzel and Jaeger Schnitzel, and Pretzel-Crusted Walleye with Dijon buerre blanc. The extensive selection of pastries homemade here are luscious. They also feature a children's menu with fun selections. Alcohol is served.

This is a special occasion place or any time when you're looking for refined dining.

Bar Divani (Michigan's West Coast)
15 Ionia Ave. SW | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-774-9463
One of the sweetest little "gems" in downtown Grand Rapids is Bar Divani, where the scores of wines by the glass and bottle can be enjoyed in flights, by the glass, or bottle and take front and center status here. The food at Bar Divani is also wonderful. The small plates especially win high marks for flavor and variety including marinated lamb chops glazed in hoisin, seared tuna over bell pepper and cucumber salad with an Asian barbeque vinaigrette, pan-seared scallops with a ragout of Cannellini beans, bacon, apples and celery drizzled in chili oil, or hummus with pita points. The many flatbreads with creative toppings are also extra special. The interior of Bar Divani is mysteriously intriguing with heavy curtains beyond the front door, cushy chairs and tables at the entrance and the bar with about six to seven tables for diners and drinkers. This is a great meeting place and is extremely popular for the ambiance, as well as the great service, food and drink.

They have a lot of selections on the menu including fresh fish, fried lake perch, golden fried smelt, and coconut shrimp. There's also mexican nachos, quesadillas, and burgers and sandwiches. They also serve a few entrees such as prime rib, as well as salads.

Bloom (Michigan's West Coast)
40 Monroe Center St. NW #1A | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-632-2233
Bloom is a fairly new restaurant which is making a big splash in downtown Grand Rapids. Owned by Secchia Culinary Institute graduates who describe their menu as "progressive American cuisine with an emphasis on high quality, organic, local and natural ingredients. Their cocktail list also includes small estate grown wines and a selection of artisan american beers as well as creative cocktails. The food at Bloom is very good and creatively presented in artistic shapes and unusual presentations that make the experience extra special. Every single item on the menu, in fact, like the bacon, egg, and toast in the form of a soup and the grassfields farm lamont cheddar, pickled cipollini, ingrabergs farm baby carrots, and grilled bread make you want to sample everything. They have smaller plates and regular entree portions for the lighter/bigger eater. There are so many things to talk about that you have to see the menu yourself to really enjoy the breath of special items and flavor combinations that they offer at Bloom.

Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)
216 VanRaalte Avenue | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-396-0600
The Boatwerks bar and restaurant overlooks Lake Macatawa in Holland with spectacular views and a romantic outdoor setting that's hard to beat. The atmosphere is a wonderful place for a date and romantic evening even if you just stop by for a drink and appetizer at the handsome wooden bar in the winter or the outdoor terrace in the warmer months. The vibe is really good here. They're open seven days a week with a brunch on Sundays. The dinner menu is appetizing. This restaurant is highly recommended for the beauty and their very interesting, extensive menu. They have macaroni and cheese as one of their entrees where you can add kielbasa as either a small or large portion. They also have many salads and appetizers including steamed mussels with a mustard cream broth and guacamole with fresh salsa, a mainstay summer meal. Their burger selection is good including a vegetarian slider of three minis. The steaks and Caribbean swordfish also caught my eye. They cater and have a "party to go" menu for boaters and cottage dwellers, too. If you're in a boat you can actually pull into the restaurant from Lake Macatawa and stay there for a memorable evening with friends or as a couple. Service is also very good with plenty of seats to serve a lot of diners.

Brick Road Pizza (Michigan's West Coast)
1017 Wealthy Street | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-719-2409
Brick Road Pizza Company serves up gourmet, traditional and vegan pizzas. They use locally brewed beer in their dough for the pizzas, sandwiches and breadsticks which adds to the flavor. Their attention to good stewardship shows in the use of "free range" turkey and pork sausage, the vegan menu made from non-animal derived ingredients and the use of recycled paper products and cups made from corn and forks and plates made from potato starch are all the more reason to like this restaurant. Their motto is "we love this earth, we love this community, we love people, and we love food!" That's way so many people love them. Located along the cool Weathy Street resurgence of businesses in Grand Rapids

Brownstone (Michigan's West Coast)
101 Sinclair Drive | Muskegon, MI, 49441 | 231-798-2273
Located in the Muskegon County Airport this unassuming restaurant features white linens and good cutlery. Fine dining in a regional airport is not the usual expectations but ratings of this restaurant were very good and the ahi tuna was thought to be as good as any around by travelers from distant states.

Butches Dry Dock (Michigan's West Coast)
44 East Eighth Street | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-396-8227
Butch's is one of the best for great wines and a fabulous meal. Offering regular wine diners with established world wineries, this is a restaurant and and an extensive wine/gourment shop in downtown Holland. The restaurant would be considered fine dining, but since we are in a town where summer casual is "in" the dress is less formal. Butch's has been acclaimed by Wine Spectator and their 700 label wine selection includes varietals from all over the world. This is a kid friend place for lunch where they can order Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and you can have a nice Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand with a fresh pasta dish. The dinner menu is really creative with nice appetizers, soups, salads and light entrees that taste great but won't discourage a walk on the lovely street or a visit to the beach to see the sunset after your meal. Stand out menu items include the mussels Masala in a curry lobster stock or the beef carpaccio. There are six other equally as appetizing apps on the menu. The gorgonzola Caesar salad looks nice as does the Chilean Sea Bass with fava beans, vine ripened tomato and fresh sage in a lobster broth. All the entrees frankly look great, but are too numerous to expound upon. And with over 700 wines to choose from, who could go wrong in selecting this restaurant. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of food.

Butch's Beach Burritos (Michigan's West Coast)
726 S. Harbor Drive | Grand Haven, MI, 49419 | 616-842-3690
This iconic location in a little colorful abode close to the beach is about as casual as you can get, but the food is great and you can stop by in your bathing suit. Since 1987 they've built a solid clientele, both locals and knowledgeable visitors who know "where to go for good food". This is Mexican all the way with bean, cheese and beef burritos with all the fixings. They also have tacos, hard and soft shell, and speciality hot dogs and salads. Their kids menu includes hot dogs and piquito (little people's Mexican food).

Featuring a mixed menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees, the setting is pleasant and the cascading waterfall, elegant setting with white linens and low lighting is a romantic atmosphere for any occasion. Corez (Michigan's West Coast)
919 Cherry Street SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49506 | 616-855-2310
Corez Wine Bar is one of my favorite places. The reason? It is ultra modern with a minimalist decor and the wine and cheese pairings are divine. I love the staff and the casual, yet sophisticated feel of this place. It's a little hidden gem where one can go for a glass of wine, little plates of food for a more sophisticated palate and cheese and charcuterie that meld deliciously with the wide selection of wines that you can order four ways: 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, or by the bottle.
When you go, let the staff select your wine and cheese selections - sometimes the best are not listed on the menu. I also love the bbq glazed sweetbreads from the small plates section and the mixed shellfish saffron stew, a light, fresh soothing dish that works in warm and cool seasons.

2027 Northpark Dr. | Holland, MI, 49424 | 616-395-8393 | Fax: 616-395-0190
People really like this place and say that the steaks are good and prices are reasonable. Opened in 1995 it has won local awards for "best steak place" and all around best restaurant for Holland in 2006. The restaurant specializes in slow roasted prime-rib, burgers, barbeque ribs, many different steaks and fresh soups and other items from Southwest U.S. Their chicken corn chowder with bread is mentioned as exceptional. This place is noisy and you'll likely have to wait in line. If you like your steak and don't mind a crowded atmosphere in a casual setting this may be perfect for you!

Curragh Irish Pub (Michigan's West Coast)
73 East 8th Street | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-393-6340 | Fax: 616-393-6350
A local favorite beer and burger drinking establishment, the Curragh has any beer or Irish whiskey for the connoisseur. On Sunday mornings they even have live Irish music (it may be too early for a pint, but the coffee and music are great!). Their desire at Curragh where they have been inspired to create "a little bit of Ireland" through their unique pub experience in the heart of this Dutch community. There's also a sister publ by the same name in Schaumburg,Illinois. The brunch menu looks yummy with such items as "Bubble and Squeek" potato pancakes and scrambled eggs and "Smoked Salmon Hash" served with two eggs any style and Irish soda bread and fruit. The soups, salads and sandwiches numerous and wonderfully described look great including "Gaelic Steak" a ribeye with sauteed onions and mushrooms covered in an Irish whiskey sauce, the Galway Bay Seafood Fleadh with shrimp, crab and marsarpone stuffed pollack served with potato crab cakes and lime hollandaise, and Jameson Glazed Salmon topped with gorgonzola cheese. They serve traditional Irish Fayre as well - Fish and Chips, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Stew, and more. Salads like the Panko roasted salmon salad and blackened cod over caesar salad appeal to me. The burgers and sandwiches also look appealing. Now for the beer and Irish whiskey: They have 11 imported drafts like Smithwicks, Guinness, and Harps as well as local brews, domestics and imports in bottles. They even have a non-alcoholic bottled bar from Ireland called Kaliber. They have 12, 14, 18, and 21 year old whiskeys like Bushmills and Jameson as well as a very rare Middleton that is one of Ireland's most exclusive. Looks like a fun place to be with a fun group of friends (one of them Irish, of course, to keep the group entertained..)

Dockers Fish House and Lounge (Michigan's West Coast)
3505 Marina View Point | Muskegon, MI, 49441 | 231-755-0400
Dockers Fish House and Lounge is located near Pier Marquette Beach. It's in the Harbor Town Marina overlooking Muskegon Lake. It's a big place with three outdoor patio areas and indoor bar and main dining room. It's a nice boater's hang out and perfectly suited to spending a leisurely afternoon or evening capturing scenic views of the lake. Their menu is great with all things that are fish and seafood oriented like chowder, Maine lobster and jumbo lump crab cakes and sweet Maine Lobster and artichoke dip. Of course there are plenty of other things too that sound just as appetizing. But the creamy lobster mac n' cheese, the fried perch and the honey dijon pretzel encrusted walleye sound good to me. There's popcorn and coconut shrimp, prime rib, fish tacos, a number of sandwiches, salads and burgers as well - enough to satisfy anyone's taste. The desserts look divine: Warm flourless mint chocolate torte, tiramisu, and creme brulee of the day are just starters. There are enticing specials of the day - on Sundays they have price off bloody marys and $5 Patrons.

Everyday People (Michigan's West Coast)
11 Center Street | Douglas, MI, 49406 | 269-857-4240 | Fax: 269-857-8806
The Chicago Tribune had good things to say about this restaurant. Billed as serving casual comfort food in an eclectic environment, I would say that this is under estimating the gourmet features at this restaurant. The Executive Chef is son of the original owner. He was trained at the Secchia Culinary Institute in Grand Rapids and he along with the Managing Chef, Michael Bild have brought creativity and energy to this restaurant over the past eight years. The entrees are all tasty from the moraccan spice rubbed lamb chops to butternut squash dumplings and the gorganzola pork chop. The appetizers are divine and on a summer or fall day you can enjoy the outdoor wine garden where impressive jazz and blues musicians perform during special evenings. Appetizers worth their salt include: The tapas plate, the spanish cheese plate, wasabi pea crusted tuna and mussels monaldo. A nice wine list is featured and they also serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays and lunch Thursday through Sunday.

Famous India (Michigan's West Coast)
6022 Harvey Street | Muskegon, MI, 49444 | 231-798-9998 | Fax: 231-799-1818
For vegetarians, this might be the best place in the area although the setting is not the most elaborate. Located in a little strip mall, it has authentic Indian food and scores high on the ratings with Naan breads, vegetarian dishes with nut dumplings, mango curry chicken and spicy lamb. Called a great "find" this is wonderful food in a less than great atmosphere, but it you are looking for food that's great than this may be your little gem.

Gaia (Michigan's West Coast)
209 Diamond Ave. SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49506 | 616-454-6233
Gaia restaurant in Grand Rapids is perfect for vegetarians and those who like a hearty wholesome breakfast with organic, no meat ingredients. The atmosphere is earthy with wooden tables and recycled chairs. The staff is laid back. If you were a hippie or are currently one, this place is for you. The coffee is great and you get to serve yourself so there's no waiting. Your breakfast, lunch and dinner order is taken by mostly friendly, "no problem" wait staff. The Mex-Brex, Paul Collins breakfast, and Cuban Eggs are great! The "Mean Green Burritto" is wonderful. I've actually purchased their green sauce because it's so delicious. Also the Gaia cookies are a meal in and of themselves - and boy do they pack a punch, with dates, nuts, carob chips, and chewy goodness. Gaia is a true vegetarian restaurant that most people are in love with. It's kind of like returning to the 60's in a nice sense.

Honey Creek Inn is a special restaurant and pub located in the little burg of Cannonsburg just northeast of Grand Rapids. This pub, which began in 1984 with the restoration of its historic building, was started by Don Kurylowicz who wanted a "true European pub". Since its opening the Honey Creek Inn has become widely appreciated for an ecclectic menu with great food including their homemade polish sausage for their sandwich and entree in its honor. ,Honey Creek Inn also offers knock out burgers including the Black Russian which is a 1/3 pound ground round with grilled onions, melted swiss and mayo on rye, three varieties of Reubens, a Greek Gyro with homemade cucumber sauce in a pita with lettuce and tomato, and "Baskets" featuring blue gills, smelt, fresh whitefish, chicken strips or wing dings. HopCat (Michigan's West Coast)
25 Ionia Avenue NW | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-451-4677
HopCat is all about bringing their patrons "great beer". They specialize in Michigan brews, but also offer a wonderful range of globally produced beer with a large Belgian selection. The inside of this pub is large with a lot of wood including an incredible bar. Seating is at booths and long wooden tables. Music is sometimes offered, as well by local bands. They have events such as Tuesday Ladies Night where the chief beer geek picks 3 to 4 drafts to put on special for only $2 and they offer 25% off on appetizers for the ladies. They have a nice bar menu that pairs well with beer including the Famous Koegal Bratwurst with sauerkraut and stone ground mustard, a Turkey or Corned Beef Reuben served with spicy citrus coleslaw, and Veggie Chili or Tomato Bisque. Their appetizers sound perfect for a splurge with really "hot" wings, Crack Fries that are highly seasoned, beer battered fries that "are addicting" and served with warm dipping cheese. Or try the cheese and cured meat plate with mustard, gherkins, and toasted pumpernickel. The fresh mussels with chorizo in a tomato, garlic, basil broth also sounds yummy. Vegetarians should be happy with many selections available off of the entree and appetizer menu.

"The" location for the freshest seafood in Grand Rapids is Leo's. Leo's is owned by longtime restauranteer, Leo who ran Charley's Crab for a long time. He struck out on his own to bring the best fish to West Michigan and has done a fine job. The restaurant is conveniently located downtown within minutes of hotels and the Van Andel Arena. Locals swear by it as the best restaurant in the city and so there are many followers who keep this place busy. The nice part about this restaurant is that it is extra fancy and special in the main dining room where you can have the romantic and sophisticated experience that you would want for a special occasion dinner or with a group of business clients. In the bar area, which is spacious and nicely designed, you can sit at high topped tables or the bar for a last minute stop for a cocktail and hor douevre or a full meal when you don't feel dressed or ready for a more "refined" experience. The staff is friendly, no matter what. The food is also top notch and will likely exceed your expectations. The menu changes according to the season. Mangiamo's (Michigan's West Coast)
1033 Lake Drive SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49506 | 616-742-0600
The Gilmore Collection has created a great restaurant in Mangiamo! An Italian venue within a unique refined estate. The restaurant is located within a mansion that was constructed in 1875 and a part of the early Grand Rapids lumberbaron history. Each room within the mansion has been restored to create an "old world" atmosphere" that makes guests feel like they've returned to a former era. The lively bar is beautifully adorned with old photographs and high ceilings, the main dining room is grand with a warm fireplace, many table and beautiful ambiance and decor. There are many other rooms as well including the outdoor terrace and the intimate tiled terrace overlooking the gardens. The menu is "creative" Italian with Mangiamo inspired flairs throughout. Antipasti includes steamed mussels with tuscan potatoes and roma tomatoes in broth with white wine, shallots, and fresh herbs. There are numerous neopolitan and Sicilian pizzas, sandwiches, seasonal plates, pastas, and entrees. Some of the most interesting include the rigatoni carbonara with pancetta cream, mushrooms, peas and pancetta, shrimp scampi capellini wth shallots, garlic, lemon, red chiles, baby spinach and oven roasted tomatoes and white wine and garlic butter finish. Entrees of note include braised lamb shank with cannelli beans, spinach, escarole and balsamic jus and gremolatta as well as seafood linguine with mussels, shrimp, crab, zucchini, leeks, spinach, and fire roasted tomato cream. There are many, many other entrees worthly of mention with seafood, veal, pork, beef, and fish available at this restaurant.

Margarita's Mexican Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)

This authentic Mexican restaurant is owned by local Mexican proprieters. It's no wonder in this city with a large Hispanic population that there are some Mexican restaurants that are categorized by patrons as "great".
Margarita's is located in an unassuming location and the restaurant is fairly small. However, the restaurant is busy and the "no frills" environment doesn't detract from the food. The Taco's (seven different kinds), Vegetarian dishes, and Seafood selections take front and center on the menu. Specials of the house include Asado de Puerco - cubed pork in a special sauce, Beef, Chicken and Shrimp Fajita's, Nopales a la Mexicana Con Camarones - shrimp sauteed with tomatos, onion, jalapeno's, and cactus, and Sopes, which are hand made corn dough tortilla's topped with your favorite filling, and Gorditas, which are hand made corn dough pockets stuffed with your favorite filling. There are many lunch and dinner combinations, as well as, desserts like Sopapillas, Fried Ice Cream, and Flan. No alcohol is served here.

Pints & Quarts Pub and Grill (Michigan's West Coast)
950 West Norton | Muskegon, MI, 49441 | 231-830-9889 | Fax: 231-830-9558
This is a high end pub and grill with unique drinks and great food. Started by four brothers who live and work in the Muskegon area the restaurant is run by savvy restaurant trained folks from Johnson and Wales University in culinary arts and restaurant management. The name Pints and Quarts comes from the phrase "mind your P's and Q's". In the late 1700's when men would meet, they brought their ale in pint or quart glasses. The bar maids would mark their glasses with a "p" or "q" to keep track of how much they would drink so their bill could be totalled. As they talked about treason and other unmentionable subjects, they told the bar maids to go away and "mind your "P's" and "Q's", meaning mind your own business. A cute story for a friendly place that serves gourmet vegetarian pastas, thai udon noodles with beef, fancy meatload, barbeque ribs, steaks, and chicken marsala. They also serve seafood, a number of starters, salads and burger with interesting creative ingredients. An elaborate drink and beer/ale menu will engage your fancy. For the discerning scotch drinker, might be among the best places in the area. The wine list is short but decent.

Piper Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)
2225 South Shore Drive | Macatawa, MI, 49434 | 616-335-5866 | Fax: 616-335-6797
This restaurant has an outstanding view of Lake Macatawa, the grand lake which is the setting for Holland which leads out to Lake Michigan. The Piper is nicely rated and food is artfully prepared. The service may be great or less than depending on the knowledge of the particular wait staff. If you're a avid foodie and love interesting wines to explore it may be a good idea to let the host know prior to seating. The view and eclectic environment s worth any small oversite. For the most part the food is great with steaks, tapas small plates, free-range chicken, organic salmon and an appetizer rib plate. The desserts are also very good especially the Rum Vanilla Carmel Flan. The mushroom medley served atop a cauliflower puree, the spinach bread made with spinach, chick pea puree, served on flat bread with shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano, the Lamb Chops with sun dried tomato sauce, and the Scallop Stew with sweet corn, baby spinach served on chorizo polenta broth sound appetizing and out of the ordinary. I would love to try the organic Salmon or any one of the Specials that the publicize on their website and offer per day. The wines are very decendently priced by the glass. The special the evening that this was written included a Grilled Quail Combo - a sage-grilled quail with garlic sausage hash and balsamic onions; roasted duck ravioli with morel mushrooms, served with baby spinach and oven-dried tomato. The chef is creative.

Rose's (Michigan's West Coast)
530 Lakeside Drive SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49506 | 616-458-1122
Rose's Restaurant, owned by the Gilmore Collection is attributed the distinction of bringing New American dining to West Michigan. Many young chefs cut their teeth on the experiences of working for the Gilmore's and now have gone on to create their own restaurants of distinction in other areas of the city and beyond. Rose's is perfectly located in trendy, upscale East Grand Rapids where many of the wealthiest families have homes along Reeds Lake. As the "mother" of Gilmore Collections flagship of restaurants, Roses was a success story from the beginning when it was resurrected as a new restaurant in the early 1990's. It retains a charm that originated in the late 19th century, when East Grand Rapids was a summer resort for tourists (mostly from Chicago). Rose's is the last standing building from that era and now includes a year round outdoor deck and year round view of beautiful Reed's Lake from the dining area. With tasty starters like blue water crab fondue, housemade root chips, and many other favorites, the food is top notch. The butternut squash bisque soup is a signature soup on the menu. Huge dinner salads, healthy pastas, wood-fired pizza's, and numerous sandwiches and entrees are equally fine. The clientele are many regulars who live in the East Grand Rapids Area. Sunday Brunch is served until 2 p.m. with omelets, wood baked vanilla bean French toast, grilled chicken and ricotta crepes, brunch pizza, belgian waffle and a slew of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers or pizza. On Sunday, Bloody Marys and other drinks are available, but only after 12 noon - It's the law!

There's a fine steak house restaurant in the BOB, as well as a fresh fish and seafood restaurant, a wood-fired pizza and sandwich restaurant, a brew house, a comedy club and a number of bars where live entertainment is almost always taking place. Nightly food and drink specials and special events and activities always keep this place hopping and active. The people watching is almost like one of the main attractions! Actually, the BOB is like a little "street" of it's own with so many venues that you could stay here all night and not get bored because of what's happening just a few steps away. This feature is especially attractive during the colder months when going outside is an ordeal. It's better to almost stay put and at the BOB you can travel around from floor to floor and experience a new bar and restaurant all within the same building. The foods at any one of the many restaurants is consistently good. The steak house, Judson's, is especially wonderful with the most upscale menu and service in the place.

The Electric Cheetah (Michigan's West Coast)
1015 Wealthy Street | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-451-4779 OR Take out: 616-451-4791
This restaurant with the creative name has just started up along the Weathy Street corridor where new restaurants seem to be popping up monthly. The menu includes creative salads and sandwiches with a farm to table emphasis. Meats are sourced from local Creswick Farms. The handcut fries, Phyllis' Homemade Pies (yum!), and warm homemade cookies and milk are specials as are the "fancyful soups" of the day and the regular saffron tomato bisque.
No liquor license here, so if you're in the mood for a drink, it'll have to be soft. Try their organic milk or the wide selection of root beers.

The Grand Seafood and Oyster Bar (Michigan's West Coast)
22 Washington Ave. | Grand Haven, MI, 49417 | 616-847-8944
Located in the lobby of the Grand Theatre built in 1927, this restaurant offers a selection of oysters, sushi, seafood, and steaks. Live jazz and blues is offered throughout the year, as well as, outdoor dining in the summer. This restaurant is heavily weighted on the seafood, as you would expect. Their sushi bar is nicely represented and interesting seafood items include appetizers like seared scallops with a spicy peanut sauce and baked lobster dip with pita chips. Fresh fish entrees include ahi tuna with sticky rice, halibut grilled New Mexican style, grilled wild salmon with asian barbeque, and swordfish piccata. There are many other selections and a few beef and chicken offerings, but mostly seafood. Their extensive drink, sake, and beer menu is interesting. They also have a good selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass.

The Grill Room (Michigan's West Coast)
3 Washington | Grand Haven, MI, 49418 | 616-846-3300
This one-stop restaurant location features three different restaurants, The Kirby Grill, their popular festive family friendly restaurant; The Grill Room, a traditional style chophouse; and the K2, their wood-fired pizzeria. The food at any one of the three locations is always good. They offer a casual dining experience within a great setting including big ceilings, a huge bar, French posters, lots of wood, and live blues, jazz, reggae, and rock on some evenings. You're pretty much assured that anything you're hungry or thirsty for can be found at the Kirby House. The Grill Room serves wonderful steaks, aged premium beef, some 2 pound versions like the Porterhouse and others smaller and choice cuts as in the center cut filet. They have king crab legs and other surf varieties, as well. Sauces for the steaks include bearnaise, guajillo chili, brandy cream and spicy garlic butter. Other entrees are available including a chipotle barbeque pork chop or stuffed filet with boursin and goat cheese. Seafood specialties include a pan roasted cod filet and "seafood bucatini", large tiger shrimp, jumbo sea scallops, and mussels tossed with pancetta, marinated tomatoes, in a basil infused tomato broth. Salads, soups and appetizers are also available.

The more casual Grill Room at The Clearbrook takes the same quality of food to a relaxed level of service. Serving small plates like grilled chicken barbeque spring rolls or grilled marinated skirt steak with salsa verde or entrees of braised BBQ Beef Short Ribs and pan-seared Atlantic Salmon Croquettes make this location an intriquing dining choice at a modest price. Salads, creative pizzas, pastas and sandwiches are out of the ordinary. This is the place to go without thought as to whether the food will exceed expectation...it will, without a fuss.

The Rosebud (Michigan's West Coast)
100 Washington St. | Grand Haven, MI, 49417 | 616-846-7788
The Rosebud, situated in downtown Grand Haven, has been a bar and restaurant in one form or another since 1934. As the Rosebud, it's a popular spot to dance to live music or to gather for dinner or drinks. The building in which it resides was originally the post office and later became a local candy shop and ice cream parlor. It later became a tavern under the name of "The Green Mill Tavern" in 1934 where cold beer and sandwiches were served. Since 1998 when a massive facelift took place the Rosebud has served a menu with steaks, seafood and pasta. They are open for lunch with sandwiches, salads and appetizers, and for dinner their entree menu has entrees like Pretzel Crusted Walleye and maple glazed Pork Tenderloin with fennel and curried gnocchi. They serve beef tenderloin with a cabernet deduction and prime rib. There is also an extensive list of appetizers and salads.

The White House Bistro and Capital Lounge (Michigan's West Coast)
149 Griffith Street | Saugatuck, MI, 49453 | 269-857-3240
Owned by a Greek gentleman, this restaurant offers good Greek food within an entertaining setting. The saganaki is sizzling, and the Greek experience plate gives a taste of everything including marinated lamb chops, greek salad, and more. This restaurant has a little bit of everything including other ethnic specialties like south of the border, oriental, and good old american burgers and steak. It looks like the chef is versatile and doesn't like to get boring with the same tastes night after night. This has an interesting liveliness to it with good entertainment, although it can get a bit loud sometimes, in case you're looking for something more romantic.

The Winchester (Michigan's West Coast)
648 Wealthy St. SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 | 616-451-4969
This delightful, wholesome find on Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids is a real earthy hot spot for the urban scene. The bar food is creative including an ethnically inspired, eclectic menu where pork carnitas, plantain chips and charred salsa, and cuban reubens, combine with lamb gyro (locally sourced), a flatbread club, and pad thai. I'm especially fond of the goat cheese appetizer, which appears more like a small salad with a panko encrusted warm disc of goat cheese on fresh micro greens, crunchy fennel and oranges with a citrus dressing.
The bar restaurant is vintage wood with high ceilings, and a younger crowd gathers here.
It can get really noisy, so be prepared.

Thornapple Daily Grill (Michigan's West Coast)
445 Ada Dr. SE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49301 | 616-676-1233
The Thornapple Daily Grill is another of the Gilmore Collection Restaurants. Located east of Grand Rapids off of M-21 and Ada Drive, The "Thornapple" sits on the Thornapple River, thus it's name. The ambiance is refined casual and the outdoor deck and the bar areas are the most casual and easy places to get drinks and an appetizers. However, the same menu is served throughout, so no matter where you choose to eat here, there's a wide selection of nice salads, sandwiches and entrees. Appetizers include "dynamite shrimp", tempura fried shrimp in spicy Asian sauce, or the crab, spinach and artichoke dip, baked with mascarpone and romano cheese. Favorite entrees include the wonderful potato crusted walleye with garlic redskin mashed potatoes and green beans, the garlic rosemary grilled beef tenderloin or the coriander cinnamon pork tenderloin. Off course there are other fish dishes, chicken and beef as well as pasta entrees. The salads are very fresh including a nice organic baby spinach salad with goat cheese and a luscious blackberry-lavendar-honey viniaigrette or the bibb lettuce with walnuts, bleu cheese, granny smith apples and sticky chardonnay vinaigrette. Sandwiches are tops, too, including the root beer barbeque pulled pork and the grilled zucchini and tomato with roasted onions, goat cheese, organic greens and garlic artichoke spread on a toasted 8-grain bread. You can tell from the few items listed here, that the food is creative and the selections are interesting enough to try this place out. The inside dining rooms are more refined and quiet with three seperate dining areas. The restaurant is like a house in that it has many rooms that you can choose to have a great meal within a relaxed setting.

Till Midnight (Michigan's West Coast)
171 East 24th | Holland, MI, 49423 | 616-392-6883
Til Midnight is a gourmet upscale restaurant where you will find interesting dinner selections like the mushroom, leek and goat cheese ravioli appetizer or crispy lobster spring rolls, a mini rack of lamb and soft shell crab entrée, as well as swordfish, smoked duck breast and a pan-seared red snapper or grilled beef tenderloin served with unique ingredients and interesting flavors. Their breakfasts look gourmet-great as well. Til Midnight bakes all of their own breads and specialty pastries on-site. I would expect them to be top notch within their lovely new home in the Baker Lofts development in Holland. They have weekly "wine socials" on Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. during the summer including special wines from various world regions and live music.

In the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Tre Cugini is a favorite upscale Italian restaurant of visitors and conventioneers as well as locals. Entrees are refined with sauces and many dishes to chose from including Osso Buco with saffron risotto, and fresh fish selections. The Bellini's and the martini's are healthy pours. Desserts are worth saving space for: panna cotta, tiramisu, flourless chocolate cakes with rich fillings. The wine list is impressive with many Italian selections. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner during the week and Dinner only on Saturday. Reservations are recommendend. Unkh's Japanese Restaurant (Michigan's West Coast)
332 E. Lakewood Blvd | Holland, MI, 49424 | 616-394-0020
Unhk's is the real deal Japanese Restaurant - thought to be "authentic" by travelers who are Japanese cuisine savvy. Described as a "beautiful restaurant with great food" there are reports that the sushi might be on par with Japan's restaurants of this style. They are now serving steaks and Japanese food so the menu has recently changed. The miso soup and salads are reported to be good. Their gyoza (dumplings) and korokke (potatoe pancakes) are also good as are the dipping sauces that accompany them. The desserts are unusual for a Japanese restaurant and this is one area where they cross over to deliver Western favorites like creme brulee and other mouthwatering delights. They do not currently have a liquor license. Sushi is not the main attraction here.

Wally's Bar & Grill (Michigan's West Coast)
128 Hoffman Street | Saugatuck, MI, 49453 | 269-857-5641
Wally's is one of those authentic quirky places that can make your trip fun. If you don't mind waiting when it's packed as meals can take up to an hour to get to the table, you will have fun if your head is in the right place - to relax, enjoy the very diverse crowd and not get too excited about the service which may or may not be right on that particular night. What I like about Wally's is that the food is authentic, the place is extremely casual and the drinks like margaritas can be just right. Order the special and the house favorite. You'll like it if you're looking for something a bit out of the ordinary. Prices are inexpensive.

Roasted thyme infused Confit of Duck (Michigan's West Coast)
Source: The Heritage 151 Fountain Street NE | Grand Rapids, MI, 49503
616-234-3700
Roasted thyme infused Confit of Duck by Chef Angus Campbell, instructor at The Heritage restaurant in Grand Rapids, is a dish that melts in your mouth. It is served with garlic chive Yukon gold potato hash, baby carrots, buttered snap peas, orange sesame salad and sauce bigarade.
Confit of Duck
The French word confit means "preserved," and the process was created to preserve a variety of meats and poultry. The most traditionally ingredients associated with confit are goose, duck and pork. The process involves curing the meat in salt, then poaching it slowly in fat, and storing it covered with the fat until you are ready to eat it or use it in further cooking. The technique evolved over thousands of years in cultures around the world and is easily recognized in many cuisines to this day.
Curing the meat in salt makes the water in it unavailable to microorganisms which inhibit bacterial growth slowing down spoilage. Covering the meat with at least an inch of fat after it has been cooked keeps air from reaching it, further retarding the tendency to spoil. If the meat has been properly cured, a confit will keep in a cool, dark place (a cellar or refrigerator) for six months. You can also renew a confit after the first six months by re-cooking it, in which case, it will last for another four to six months. For best, flavor, however, the confit should be consumed within three to five months of the initial cooking.
