La Becasse (Leelanau)
9001 South Dunns Farm Road | Maple City, MI, 49664 | 231-334-3944
For authentic French country dining in Northern Michigan, check out La Becasse. With a chef imported from France, Guilluame Hazael-Massieaux who graduated from Ecole des Arts Culinaires et de l'hotellierie in Lyons you can't go wrong. His food is influenced by France and the West Indies and he had an internship at the 5 diamond Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids prior to landing in Northern Michigan at La Becasse after a few stops along the way. The restaurant is located in an old home on the shore of Glen Lake near the small town of Burdickville in Maple City. In the winter months they are open four nights and in other months almost every day. French country cuisine is defined as "simple food prepared really well with a French flair". They buy their produce and many of their products from farms and purveyors in the area which their website lists by name. They consider themselves "locavores". Their maxim is simple: "If not local, then organic; if not organic, then family farmed; if not family farmed, then local business; if not local business, then terrior". This suggests that local is within a 100 mile radius. The menu is as cool as the philosophy with simple selections making ordering less stressful and easy to comprehend. For instance, there is duck and pistachio pate, a seasonal soup, escargot with beurre de Bourgogne, Assiette de Fromage, and French gravlax served with a shot of Aquavit as appetizers. Entrees include every kind of meat with one selection per kind including salmon, duck, veal, lamb, beef and vegetarian - all delicious. The desserts and drinks include quite a selection, however, with the perfect cheeses, tarts, creme brulee, warm chocolate cake and more and French and michigan aperitif selections. It seems to me this is the perfect place to not stress about the selection of food, but to sit back and enjoy the experience. The ambiance is relaxed and the food is pure Northern Michigan fresh.

Trattoria Funistrada (Leelanau)
4566 MacFarlane | Burdickville, MI, 49664 | 231-334-3900
In 2001, Trattoria Funistrada was voted the best new restaurant by trendy Traverse Magazine after it just opened. It's still a hit after eight years and running. Located in a house in little out of the way Burdickville, Funistrada's menu is a pleasure to behold. Every appetizer, pasta, entree, and dessert is appealing. Among the standouts on their menu are Linguini with Salmon and Pinenuts in a gongonzola cream sauce, Angel Hair Carsoni: chicken with kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, pinenuts, mint, lemon zest and red pepper lightly tossed in olive oil; Veal Stuffed Ravioli in homemade marinara sauce; and Veal Picatta, Veal Saltimbocca and Lemon Artichoke Veal. They also serve a Kansas City Veal Chop rubbed with rosemary, sage, garlic and cracked pepper and broiled; and chicken, beef, and fish entrees. Desserts include homemade tiramisu, panna cotta, chocolate semifreddo, and strawberries with balsamic and brown sugar.
