Blue Plate Café (Harbor Country)
15288 Red Arrow Highway | Union Pier, MI, 49129 | 269-469-2370
The Blue Plate Café serves breakfast and lunch using organically grown fresh foods grown in the area. They also offer carry-out and custom order baked goods. Their breakfast menu includes multi-grain pancakes, homemade cereals, banana french toast and henhouse hash made with chicken, potatoes, onions and herbs. They also have tantalizing omelets and hearty eggs with meat and potatoes breakfasts. Lunches specialize in great sounding sandwiches like the "Santa Monica Slider", a vegetarian sandwich with marinated, grilled portabella, roasted peppers, balsamic onions and melted mozzarella with greens - or - "Carolina on My Mind", a chopped turkey breast sandwich with tangy bbq sauce, melted cheddar, sweet pickles and crunchy slaw. Even the "Panini Roma" sounds healthy and gooey good with mozzarella and gorgonzola, roma tomatoes and greens grilled. They also have a burger, veggie burgers, tuna melt and other original sandwiches and salads. Their fresh squeezed lemonade and juices and smoothies also sound great. The double fudge brownies, giant blueberry muffins and giant cookies also sound nice as do the crisps, cobblers, and crumb cakes.

Brewsters Italian Café (Harbor Country)

For good pasta, wood-fired pizza, and fresh menu selections daily based on what's fresh from the market, Brewster's Italian Café gets consistent high ratings for the ambiance and the food. They change the menu daily so everything is fresh. You might be there the night that they serve gnocchi with vodka sauce or homemade meatballs and papardelle, but the Dinner for two always includes house salad, a regular two-topping pizza, choice of pasta or entree and cookies and coffee. The outdoor patio is the place to be or in the atrium bar. Be prepared for a longer wait especially on weekends in the summer. They don't take reservations so be prepared or go on an evening that's less popular.

13581 Red Arrow Highway | Harbert , MI, 49115 | 269-469-6779
This newly remodeled Middle Eastern restaurant ranks high on the list of the best in Harbor Country. The service is very good and the wait staff are friendly and attentive to diners. The Chef, Ibrahim Parlak, from Turkey learned to cook in his mother's kitchen as one of ten children. His family grew watermelons, wheat and garbanzo beans, as well as raised sheep, cows, goats and chickens. He opened Cafe Gulistan, meaning "land of roses" in Turkish, in 1994. El Rancho Grande (Harbor Country)
310 E. Buffalo Street | New Buffalo, MI, 49117 | 269-469-9600 | Fax: 708-687 6114
The El Rancho Grande began as a small taco stand in Union Pier. But in 1997, Peter Bernal, owner and chef opened the El Rancho Grande Tex Mex Restaurant remembering the stories told by his father of his grandfather, Don Pedro Bernal Navarro who lived in the central part of Mexico. The restaurant itself has a Tex Mex decor with a room with large fireplace, another with stained glass windows and stained glass portrayals of James Bowie and Santana, two generals of the Alamo battle, and a deck and cantina bar with the 150 year old bar from Colorado. They make everything here homemade including tamales and chips and salsa. Their specialty is a whole red snapper with choice of jalapeno or garlic sauce. They also have Carne Asada, Chile Relleno, Chicken con Mole, as well as tamale, tostada, enchilada, and taco dinners. They serve Tex Mex style burgers and ribs and a number of different types of margaritas and beers. This is authentic Mexican with some Tex Mex originals.

Frankie's Place (Harbor Country)
16036 Red Arrow Hwy | Union Pier, MI, 49129 | 269-469-9865 | Fax: 269-469-9927
Frankie's Place just opened in 2007 and is a swanky place with a very nice décor and menu. Their prime time menu fix prix served between 5 and 7 p.m. is offered for $20 Monday through Thursday in summer months and Wednesday and Thursday in other seasons and includes an amuse bouche, house salad or soup, choice of select entrees and dessert. The romantic dark interior is perfect for a romantic two-some or hushed party of more. Interesting appetizer selections include the proscuitto wrapped smoked mozzarella with fig jam and toast and a balsamic reduction, and a lobster martini served over chive mashed potatoes finished with a rich white wine butter sauce. And there are other tantalizing appetizers, too. The crisp fried oyster salad and the duck salad also caught my eye. Steaks with Frankie's hand cut fries, the parmesan encrusted halibut with a bacon burgundy mushroom sauce and the Duck Confit, crispy, braised duck breast and leg served with rich custard potatoes and Grand Marnier sauce sounded divine. Frankie's also serves a few sandwiches and the most delicious desserts I've ever seen: banana foster bread pudding, handmade s'mores, peanut butter beignets with chocolate ganache and carmel sauce, and lemon cheese cake souffle's with fresh raspberry sauce. The entrees range from $19 to $38 and the salads and appetizers hover at around $7.50 to $15 depending of the selection. Desserts are all priced at $8 each.

Red Arrow Roadhouse is a popular place to the locals and vacationers who know the area. Travel and Leisure Magazine noted it as "Harbor Country's hot spot". Open 7 nights a week, Red Arrow Roadhouse is also open on Saturday and Sunday for lunch. Their menu consists of interesting starters like parmesan crusted shrimp quesadillas, house made blue cheese potatoes chips, and panko-breaded golden crisp fresh asparagus with a lemon aioli sauce. They have a country fried chicken salad with ham, chopped egg, veggie greens and a buttermilk dressing, or a lighter grilled chicken and goat cheese salad with grapes, pecans and red pepper and greens and an herb vinaigrette.
